Being able to maintain your independence is one of the main reasons why Providence home care is so important to many elderly, chronically ill, and disabled individuals. They enjoy knowing their quality of life is much better than it might be if they were to move into a facility. In order to continue experiencing the benefits of home care, it is important for many caregivers and family members that clients continue to have the best possible health given their situation. One condition that can inhibit the level of independence a person can maintain is osteoporosis.
Approximately 10 million Americans suffer from osteoporosis, and about 34 million are at risk for bone loss. Osteoporosis is a progressive bone disease which decreases bone mass and density. Poor bone health care leads to fractures and breaks, which can in turn into decreased mobility. In order to limit your risk, it is important to get enough calcium and vitamin D in your diet.
Calcium
Calcium is vital to bone health. Unfortunately, as we age the body bones lose calcium, which is also important for blood, cell, and muscle health. Women should be particularly concerned since menopause is a prime time for loss of the mineral. Although there are calcium supplements out there, the best way to get it is from your food. Most people are aware that dairy products are a good source of the substance, but not everyone tolerates milk, cheese, yogurt and other dairy products well. Some other foods to turn to are dark leafy greens (think: kale, arugula, collards), broccoli, almonds, white beans, oranges, salmon, and okra. It is recommended that adults age 51-70+ should have a daily diet consisting of 1200 mg of calcium.
Vitamin D
Vitamin D is also necessary because it helps the body absorb calcium and maintain normal calcium and phosphate levels. The best source of vitamin D is sunlight, but it is obtainable through some foods, such as fatty fish, mushrooms, and vitamin D fortified foods. Individuals up to age 70 should get 600 IU daily, and persons over 70 years of age should have 800 IU or more.
By being conscious of your calcium and vitamin D intake and stepping out to enjoy the sunlight every now and then you can help to lessen your risk of osteoporosis and bone loss.
