As many as 74 million Americans may have undiagnosed diabetes or pre-diabetes. Are some of our New Hampshire home care clients a part of that group? Find out if you have any of the warning signs so you can avoid complications, such as heart attack, stroke, and pancreatic cancer. It has even been proposed that Alzheimer’s disease is a form of the blood sugar condition and is being called “Type 3 Diabetes.” With early detection and treatment, you may be able to prevent complications and reverse the disease!
6 Warning Signs:
High Blood Pressure – High blood pressure is considered a reading of 140/90 or higher. Another sign is prehypertension (120/80 or higher). Sixty-seven million Americans are affected by high blood pressure, and another 67 million by prehypertension.
Gum Disease – Periodontal disease is an indicator of diabetes. People with gum disease are more likely to have abnormal blood sugar test results than those without gum disease.
Hearing Problems – Hearing impairment is 2.6 times more likely in people with diabetes than those without the disease. High blood sugar damages nerves and blood vessels, which may be the cause of the hearing loss.
Yellow Nails – Almost 50% of patients with diabetes have discolored nails. The big toe is the most likely nail to have the yellowish tint.
Thirst and Hunger – Intense thirst and hunger are common signs of diabetes, but they may not appear until later in the progression of the disease. Frequent urination is also a telltale symptom.
Large Waistline – Even men and women with a normal weight can have a large stomach, which may be an indicator of diabetes. Men with a waist measurement over 40 inches, and women to measure more than 35 inches that lend to an apple shaped body should be cautious and prescribe to diet and exercise that reduces belly fat.
