Living in a home where three or more generations are under one roof can be a blessing. Relationships are often stronger between children and grandparents when they inhabit the same home. That is not to say that these living arrangements are not without challenges. The middle generation may feel that their parents are overstepping boundaries when they reprimand the children or interject into parenting decisions. The oldest generation can feel pushed out of decision making in the home. Spouses might find emotions running high as they add extra people to their home and experience changes in the family dynamic. Many of our home health care NH clients are very familiar with the benefits and trials of living with children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, etc.
Millions of Americans are currently living in multigenerational households for a variety of reasons. The two most common are for financial security and/or care purposes. Home care is an increasingly popular option for health care, with a large percentage of the population either taking on caregiving duties or being cared for by a relative or friend. It is significantly less costly than moving a loved one into a nursing home or assisted living facility, promotes independence, and fosters the continuation of close family relationships. That said, in order to make the situation work, all parties must have good communications.
Communication Tips
Talk it out. Even before you move in together you should sit down and discuss everyone’s expectations for the situation and each person’s needs. Once living together, continue to communicate rather than letting resentment build over small annoyances.
Be a good listener. If you expect others to listen to your concerns you must listen to them in return. Do not interrupt or dismiss other’s comments quickly. By being honest and paying attention when appropriate everyone will feel comfortable bringing up issues that arise in the future.
Loosen up. If you find yourself focusing on the negative and feeling tense all the time it may be time to just let it go. Find something everyone loves to do together to release tension and remind you of the good times you have together.
